Open Doors, 2004
wood, site’s doors
8′ x 16′ x 8′
This work was envisioned and completed as an integral part of the first Open Doors Collective’s exhibition.
The work used 4 doors (2 interior, plus the front and back doors) that were removed from my house to make room for the large installations inside. With the doors removed, the audience’s experience was more fluid. These doors were re-installed on a wooden platform that blocked entrance to the backyard. This created a new space in the backyard where everyone visiting the installation exhibition congregated.

The work started as a conversation between Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Terra Goolsby and I. Then, I worked with my dad to draw the plans and minimize our materials use before finally getting a crew of volunteers together to build the structure.
The work was built by Terra Goolsby, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Kate Scherer, Jacob Villanueva, Cole Thompson, Cesar Alexander Villareal, Greg Cross, Hunter Cross, and Sandra Martinez. Jonathan Marshall made the doors fit perfectly, saving the piece on the night of the opening.
The first photo was shot by Chris.
